Presentation Evening
Over 120 players, family and friends attended this years Awards
Presentation Evening held on Saturday 27 November at the County
Hotel in Carnforth; and a very grand occasion it was. The glitz and
glamour of an Oscar night would have been hard pressed to beat such
an event! Our compere for the evening was once again the
irrepressible Tony (The
Bow Tie) Thackray, with the prizes being given out by MD Chris (The
Tie-less) Larder.
Our congratulations go to all those players nominated for the prizes
and especially to the prize winners. A full list of the winners,
complete with photographs will be appearing shortly.
Blowathon
The Morecambe Brass
Band Association and musical friends were out supporting Pudsey Bear for Children in Need playing for a gruelling 10 hours between 11am and 9pm on
Saturday 20 November at The Platform in Morecambe.
There were in
excess of 100 musicians taking part from many different local bands,
and the whole day culminated with the 1812 Overture, complete
with exploding balloon (the canons were considered a fire risk in
The Platform!)
Many members of the public took the opportunity to select music for the
band to play, conduct and even play. Our thanks go to everybody that
contributed to the Children in Need Fund and for supporting us on the
day.
A special
thanks must go to Pudsey for coming to visit us personally, to the BBC
for filming part of the occasion, but particularly to all the band
friends, helpers and organisers, Ian Burgoine for the masses of hard
work in organising the event and to our compere for the day Tony (The
Tambourine) Thackray.
Congratulations to MD Chris Larder and Solo Cornet Chris Blaylock for
sharing the conducting and even finding time to play as well. The local
hospital did not
report any strained
conducting arms or numb lips! although Chris L did report not being able
to lift his arm above shoulder height.
Lifeboat
Appeal in E flat (Back to the
Top)
Eb Bass player PC Neil Pigott, who joined the band a few weeks ago,
appeared on Radio Lancashire on Wednesday 20 October to give details
of his quest to raise funds towards the "House for the Hover"
appeal, the fund raising for a new home for the Morecambe RNLI
Hovercraft. Well done Neil for playing the whole 10 hour Children in
Need Blowathon stint to collect money for the appeal. For more
details follow the link to
www.morecambelifeboat.org .
Bob Childs Concert
(Back to the
Top)
Bob Childs, the world
famous Euphonium virtuoso was on top form during the concert on
Saturday evening (25 September). He played a total of 4 superb solos
and one duet with his former pupil and our own conductor, Chris
Larder, all accompanied by the band. Both audience and band where
treated to a impeccable display of musicianship which must surely be
unrivalled anywhere in the world.
We were privileged to have Bob attend our centenary celebrations
given his busy schedule. He had spent the previous few days in
Austria, before flying back to this country on Friday to attend our
concert on the Saturday. He is due to visit mainland Europe again
and then fly to the USA in the next few months for more concerts,
seminars and appointments.
On the morning of the concert Bob gave a master class in
Euphonium playing and practice techniques to the members and other specially invited
young guests at the Brass Academy.
One of the many things that stood out during the day Bob spent with
us, was how genuinely friendly, enthusiastic and entertaining he is
while playing and teaching.
Our special thanks go to Bob for entertaining and educating us so
brilliantly in out centenary year.

Brass Academy
Launch
(Back to the
Top)
The Brass Academy was launched this week (Saturday 11th September)
to try to capture as much local music talent and maintain the high
standards the band has set itself. In ground breaking style the band
is offering brass instrument tuition, use of an instrument, music and insurance
free of charge to any young (or not so young) players. In addition,
Parents and Carers are given a pack to detail all the information
they require to support a new player and handy hints to allow the
player to practice and perform at their best.
The turn out was magnificent at the launch on Saturday and we now
have a stunning 33 new players including 12 that signed up at the
weekend. Even better news is that
we still have space for at least 9 more people. To the pictures of
the opening day follow "Pictures"
The academy offers 12 tutors for the different
player levels and also offers regular master classes which
will include a broad variety of topics from basic practice and
techniques to the advanced "tricks" used by the countries best virtuoso. In a
real coup for the band John Miller from the Royal Northern School of
Music has offered to take a master class on a regular basis.
The Morecambe Brass Band Association runs an
Authorised Child Protection Policy
The academy runs every Saturday morning 09:30 to
12:30.
If you want to learn to play a brass instrument or know somebody
that does, follow the link to the Training Centre and find the
details, alternatively email the band at
morecambeband@hotmail.com.

Drum Kit Melts!
Morecambe Brass Band
were playing on the Promenade on Sunday 5 September when it was
noticed that the drum kit was melting. No, this isn't a story from
the Sunday Sport, it actually happen. Those present say that Drummer
Colin Hendra was playing too loudly causing the damage, but this was
denied but the player's lawyer!!
Seriously, the Pearl Custom drum kit did melt, and as yet Pearl have
not responded to any of our phone messages.
We can't recommend Pearl
drum kits for use outside.

This is an umbrella association to cover all the various facets the band
has at its disposal.
The MBBA covers the Morecambe Brass Band, Morecambe Brass Ensemble,
Morecambe Youth Band and the Morecambe Brass Academy.
All will continue to exist in their own right, but will benefit from the

Master Barney
Metcalfe
The band would like to congratulate Helen and Neil Metcalfe on the birth
of their son Barnaby James, brother to Simon and Millie. Mum and Dad play
for the band on Eb Bass and Bass Trombone respectively.
Barney was born at 16:30 on Monday 23 August 2004 and is perpetuating the
myth that baby boys do nothing but eat and sleep. |
Joe Kenyon
We would all like to wish a very speedy recovery to our Eb Bass player Joe
Kenyon, who underwent a heart bypass operation last month. Joe is now
back at home doing regular gentle exercise and recovering well, in fact he
came to listen to our last concert and was looking healthy and well.
Joe is
hoping to be back playing by the Remembrance Concert on Saturday 12
November 2004. |

Tom Gray
Having passed his A levels at Barrow 6th Form College
Tom our Solo Horn player has decided to take a year off before heading
to Music college to study the Tenor horn and Piano.
He has been offered the opportunity to travel to Thailand to teach Piano
for a year, and has unsurprisingly decided to take the offer.
We send Tom away with our best wishes and hope the venture is as good as
it sounds.
We may now get a chance for somebody else to play on the pool table!
